Default S40 Marker/Bumper light replacement?

Hi there

I'm having real trouble replacing the front marker/bumper light on my '99 1.6 S40 - armed with the all-knowing Haynes manual, replacement of the indicator lamp was no trouble at all for a complete novice like me, but then the book lied to me in the way only instructional guides know how. I was to remove the indicator and simply reach under it to disconnect the marker light from the plastic bumper and the wire from wherever it plugs in. This seemed simple, and no doubt it would have been if there wasn't a large piece of flat metal underneath the indicator, which left enough space for two or three fingers to scrabble around at the wires - not nearly enough to replace the light. Why is this here, and why is it not in the Haynes manual?

Being completely new to car maintenance, I have no idea how to or whether I should remove this piece of body, which seems to be attached to both the wing of the car and the headlight itself - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ta, Adam

If you are replacing the whole unit I have read that it is easier to carefully break the old one out of its place and you will have access to the wiring then.
I have never replaced any of these units in this, or any other way, so cannot vouch for the effectiveness of this method.

Default Marker light replacement

Haynes manual isnt lying. Just not telling you the whole story. As you know, the indicator light and reach down to near the bottom of the engine bay. The cable for the light is held captive by a clip which has to be "teased" out.
If you can get underneath you can get to this clip easier. With the clip loose you will find there is a fair length of cable to work with. This makes it easier to remove the strange clip that holds it together, or cut it and join together not forgetting to insulate really well. I have big hands and can get through the gap and didnt have too many cuts and bruises.
Take your time and it will work out.

The bumper marker lights are not easy to remove and you will invariably end up breaking one or both of the plastic clips that hold it in place, if you are replacing the marker light as a complete unit it won't matter if you break the clips.
found this,

I replaced my sidemarker led's, bit fiddly but can be done.

Default Side marker lights

Ref the previous post, if you take your time and care, you wont break the clips. I have replaced front and rear on my 1997 V40 and have yet to brek any clips. Tried LED's, sh**e.

Hi all, can anybody let me know if the bumper indicator light on my Volvo v40 1999 is the same for all the models up to 2004 or is it different for the facelift model from 2000? many thanks in advance.

Phase1 up to around 2000 are small lenses and integral bulbs. P2 are larger lamps with separate bulbs. The two are not interchangeable.
