Question Steering wheel groan/squeak???

Hi Chaps,

My last issue with my new S60 D5 hopefully!! Touch wood.

I have a definite and repeatable steering wheel squeak and don't know what's going on!!

It squeaks/groans on turning with positive kinetic feedback through the clutch pedal weirdly! The noise is coming from the start of the SRS wheel and top of the column. Tried some wd40 no joy.

Probably needs some grease in the correct place. I can manage if it's just nuisance value but would like to sort it if possible.

Cheers

Happy NY!

Happy New Year!

I had a squeak after putting everything back together after changing the clutch, turned out to be the rubber gaitor on the bulkhead, needed a spray with silicone based lubricant rather than wd40, couple of applications and quiet since then (18 months +).

Cheers bud. I know the gaiter you mean, and was thinking about it, but the noise is coming from literally just behind the steering wheel where it joins the top of the column. I agree that I should get some silicone based lubrication though!!

Thanks

Mine sounded like it was coming from the wheel/coaming area too, once the gaitor was slippy it sorted it... worth a try, only takes a few seconds to 'dose ' :-)

the quickest check is the small bearing on top (inside) of the large rubber boot right where the st column passes through the floor. Just remove the upper 14mm bolt, disconnect the st column and free the bearing. No need to remove the rubber boot.

Hi guys,

Did a bit of lubricating today and will test tomorrow. I lubricated behind the steering wheel, on the white plastic link and where the column goes through the bulk head. I moved that metal ring up to lubricate and it was pretty loose moving it from the boot. Is that normal?!

Update.

Seems better but I only used wd40. Am going to get some silicone lubricant for longevity. Will update. Thanks.

Hi guys,

An update. I procured some silicone lubricant and generously applied some up and down the steering column from the bulk head upwards. Near the boot and the white connector. Also then behind the steering wheel.

Went for a test drive today. All seems well!!

Thanks and hope it helps anyone else.
