How to change oil filter in S40 2005 2.4i ?
The question is: where is that damn oil filter?
I got filter insert at dealership ($16), I got 6 quarts of Mobil1 synthetic oil ($5/each). Then I unscrewed 7 hex screws and took off plastic cover under the engine. Oil plug was right where it suppose to be - on oil pan. But I could not find oil filter! I thought that it may be under the metal/plastic plate next to the oil plug, so I drained old oil and started to take off that plate. At this point I realized that this is not the filter. So... I spent 2 hours under my S40 trying to find oil filter cap! I gave up. Filled engine with new oil without changing filter. I took off many plastic covers, including timing belt cover. The only place I did not check - is under plastic air-duck in front/top of the engine. But I dough it could be there. Any ideas, anybody? And if i will find filter, do I need to change it now (and change oil again)? |

Hi
It's contained in a plastic vessell which has a 32mm (I think) hex head on the top of it. I don't know exactly where it is on a 5 cyl petrol enngine but on my diesel it's at the front of the engine, half way down the block. I suspect you may have to take the air filter assembly off to get at it. Hope this helps Rich |

This may or may not help:
"Oil Filter / Oil Trap The filter and trap are integrated into one unit. The filter has been moved from the oil pan to the intake side of the engine. This causes less oil spillage when replacing the filter than on previous engines. Oil flows from the outside in, through the filter. To ensure that oil still flows even if the filter is clogged, there is an overflow valve in the cover that opens at 11 kPa and when starting the vehicle from cold (-20°C to -25°C)." It's a quote from the Volvo PDF on the S40/V50 petrol engines. |

I found it!
See attached pictures:
1. Unscrew 3 10-mm bolts pointed by red arrows on pic.1 2. Snap-off and remove plastic air-duck parts highlighted in red on pic.2 3. Finally, you see filter, ponted by red arrow on pic.3 Unscrew filter counter-clockwise (as any normal screw). |
