Towbar issue
My detachable towbar can be released in the locked position!
Is the apparently broken lock an anti-theft feature only or an integral means of attachment to the car? Thanks for any advice. |

Without knowing the make of towbar or model it's fitted to, I can only comment on my experience with the Volvo (Brink) version fitted to MY04 XC70. The blue lever operates a pin that fixes the hitch to the receiver & this is what stops the hitch coming away from the rest of the car. The lock just prevents the lever being moved so it can't be stolen. A red warning indicator pings out when the blue lever is not in the secured position.

My towbar is also a Volvo one, but is differnt to the one above: I am not sure what make it is. On mine, there is a knob that is pushed in and turned to release the swan neck.
The lock is purely an anti- theft device and only prevents the release knob being pushed in. The securing mechanism is independant and not affected by the use of the lock.
