Default 4 star question for volvo 240

Hallo there, posting on behalf of boyfriend who has recently bought a Volvo 240 (engine size 230E) 1988 model. The car runs on 4 star but his local garage (Texaco) has recently informed him that they will be discontinuing it shortly and that he will need to either use one of their petrols plus an additive or have his engine converted.

However I found a page on this site stating that his model would be able to run on 98 Super Green "made by a major fuel company".

My question is can he just change to this Super Green or would he still have to use additive with this? Also does anyone know what this major company is? Having driven all over looking for 4 star a couple of days ago the guage is in the red so could do with knowing which garage to head towards!!

Replies would be gratefully appreciated, don't want him wrecking the engine considering he's only just bought the car!

thanks,

louise

I have recently acquired one of this model with the same engine from a colleague. He had been running it on ordinary unleaded for years. It runs well and shows no sign of pinking.
Two Volvo agents have confirmed to me that all Volvos will run on unleaded, the only exception being those with earlier carburettors which may wear faster because of the lack of lubricating properties in unleaded petrol.

Hi there,
The model you have is fitted with stellite valve seats which should outlast the engine no trouble.
The local dealers confirmed that this engine is ok on normal unleaded.
I found the stellite info from a Pukka workshop manual.
Regards.
