The information was in VSI. Until the new system started. Sorry buddy but you are wrong.the VSI clearly outlines in specific detail the S60 and V70 and fouling. VSI is an adjunct to the manual as are SNs (special notices) . BUT if you don't believe me then fair enough. Up to you.but it does not alter the fact Iam correct..ask any competent long term tester.

Not disbelieing you at all ... just saying that the info has always been in the tester's manual as i quoted above .. If the metal plates were not there on the volvos you would have to fail it if the wheels were rubbing through the plastic arch liner .. But as volvo have provided a specific plate ( or block in the case of Morgan) then it is permissible for the wheels to rub the metal plate , What did the SN say by the way?

No worries . in short....Volvo models S60 and V70/ tyres make contact with arch liner on lock. And this is acceptable. I still would advise.
Turning to the issue of tyres cutting through the arch liner, this would be unacceptable and a RFR..I have never seen the arch liner cut through and would indeed fail it if the sharp edge was hitting the tyre. Most, well in fact all I have seen have evidence of scuffing on the liner. You are correct in terms of the stop locks if they were missing it would be a major cause for concern. I guess the issue here is one of the wheel type/ rim size and tyre type. Hope it helps. Sadly a lot of testers who have only recently qualified would not have seen the VSI's. It is ridiculous that it is no longer available on the new set up as cars such as those with electro park brakes can cause massive issues(damage) if not tested correctly.hope this helps. Don't get me started on air suspension!!!

Hi I have found if tires have rim protectors there is more of a chance of rubbing
I have now got avon zv7 and there is no rubbing, also if camber/tracking only a bit out it can make it rub Dave |

This article say, dynamic 'evidence of tyre contact' but static it says 'No tyre contact'.
So if the tyres touch the plate they will fail it! Or am I miss-understanding this?

what it means is that when the car is static on full lock the tyres should not touch the scuff plate under the arch , but when driving slowly on full lock ( dynamic ) it allowed to touch , This is quite clear in the MOT testers manual where it says : "2. Check tyres for fouling a part of the vehicle. Note: This does not apply to vehicles designed to permit tyre contact with the chassis or frame e.g. steering lock stop function." The fact that volvo put a scuff plate there for this very function means It is ok to have scuff marks on it . The Morgan sports cars have an aluminium block screwed to the chassis rails for this very function too as do other manufacturers no doubt ..

Just out of interest - does anyone have the part number for the "rubbing plate" that fixes in the arches?
is it this by any chance? https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/p.../30744318.html I have Nebulas on my T5 and on the drivers side its starting to chew through the arch liner - there is no protection plate to be seen. |
