Which Engine?
Hi Guys, I've just taken ownership of a 740 with a 4 cyl diesel conversion in it and I've got a couple of questions:- Firstly, I'm fairly sure it's 2.7 Nissan, but it's non turbo, has anyone come across this conversion before? (Jor, on this forum thinks he saw an article in Diesel car on this conversion) and secondly:- If I change the engine (it apparently a 2.3 petrol originally) what do I put back in? a big diesel, a big petrol or back to a red block? What do you think?

Looks like a taxi engine! Old old IDI diesel from the 80s, pretty much bombproof, but drink fuel, horrible to drive (when not connected to an equally dismal auto, in which case they almost work) and don't produce enough power for the weight of the car IMO.
The 5 and 6 cylinder VW diesels that volvo used from the 80's till 00's are much better in every way, still not a modern diesel, but a good half way house. Depends how many miles you do and what you want from it? Redblocks are easy enough to come by, the 16v lump is sought after and without going +turbo, gives the best bang per hour of effort (and still cheap to find in a scrappy if lucky). |

Thanks for that Brickman, which models used the 16V? It's only a play thing so I won't be doing loads of miles and I'd like to put it back to a Volvo lump :-)
