Have a look at the gear lever joint at the base. This is made of a light weight plastic (Ford effect) that appears to be self lubing until the surface wears off. It then wears an grinds into a white powder making the gear change vague. It might have caused your dad's problem as this wear can prevent the gear selectors from being pushed fully home. Not too difficult to replace and definitely cheaper than having gearbox out. Just lift out the gear lever gaiter base plate and all will be revealed. Play in the gear lever is a sign of this wear. I caught mine early and squeazed some silicone grease in the joint and all seems fine for now.

How heavy is the caravan?
Is it within the maximum trailer weight? (should be written in the manual)
