Most decent size cars and 4x4 have a towing weight I.r.o. 1800 to 2000 kg. the XC90 slightly higher at 2250 depending on model. In almost all cases the difference between those vehicles and those that are rated 3500 kg is a low ratio gearbox - manufacturers tend to base the maximum timing weight on what the car can cope with when setting off from standstill on a 10% gradient with a certain load in the car as well. Hence on some Volvo models the cars manual transmissions are rated slightly lower than otherwise identical cars with automatic gearboxes.
None of the above theory will be any use to you of course when having to brake hard travelling down hill at 50mph or on the motorway in the wind so go for something heavier than the van and with AWD.
