What can I expect from the existing USB port?
I have a 2010 XC70 (bought second hand) which came with USB and AUX connections in the centre storage compartment.
I'm just trying to figure out what functionality I can expect from the USB port. Will this only work with USB drives, or should it support iPods and iPhones as well? My iPhone does not work or charge from this port - the display justs continues to read "please connect device". Also, please could someone confirm if the official "USB and iPod interface" accessory (link) is different to the USB port I already have? Would that get my iPhone working if I had that installed instead of the existing USB port? Thanks! |

Standard USB port doesn't play iPods but does play off a pen drive.
I think that's the lead my car has; if so then yes that works lovely through the cars controls but be warned it doesn't charge the phone if it's an iPhone 4 or newer. That's only if it is the one my car has though

My iphone 5c charges and i tunes work via the usb socket using standard apple cable, the phone works via bluetooth, I'm sure that i have managed to use the first ipod touch as well via usb. last week the usb socket was used to charge small digital camera while on a day out.

USB will charge a device. It will read an apple device be that iPod or iPhone. Please be aware if its an iPhone it will treat it as an iPod.
My car has performance sound, perhaps the standard system doesn't do this. If you want to use your iPhone as a phone in the car, you need to use the bluetooth and pair it. I don't bother as I don't like speaking to people on the phone. I don't know how it works for android devices. |

Not tried it with my android phone but I just have a 32gb pen drive stuck in there with my music on. Nice and simple. I think it just treats anything connected as mass storage device and only recognises music files.

Thanks for the reply guys. Unfortunately it seems you all have different experiences (some where USB won't work with iPhone, some where it will but won't charge, others where it should just work)... maybe there are differences in the model year of the car?
I think I need to speak to Volvo and find out exactly what my specific model should be expected to do, as currently the USB port does not recognise, or charge, my iPhone at all. |

I have the kit in your link which was fitted in the car when I got it and as the pic shows I have a Lightning adapter on it for my iPhone 6 but it didn't charge my partners old iPhone 4 either which I think has something to do with a power adapter of some kind. Here's my leads

Ah cool thanks for the info. Can I ask 5 questions? 1. Does it charge your iPhone 6? 2. Does music playback work fine with any app (e.g. Podcasts, Spotify) or does it require a specific app (i.e. Apple's offical Music app)? 3. Does it use the in-car screen? I.e. does the kit read the music on the phone, or is it just a 'dumb' audio pass-through? 4. Does the music come out of all 4 speakers? 5. Do the steering wheel controls work? And with 3rd party apps like Spotify? Thanks! Last edited by CTCNetwork; May 21st, 2016 at 12:35. Reason: Unnecessary quote removed |
