19T turbo?
Hi everyone,
I own a 1998 v70r awd auto and am wanting more power from her. I am due to get her a new exhaust, ECU upgrade and air filter fitted which im have been informed will give me around 290bhp and 400pound/Nm? torque. I was wondering, If i fit a 19T turbo would this make much of a difference? If so what are we talking in bhp. Kind Regards and happy motoring Carl |

My C70 was measured 291BHP and 430NM torque at the wheels. Allowing 15% loss through the transmission (as purely an estimate) - 335 bhp |

MTE software
Good morning Carl,
We may have spoken on the 'phone recently as you figures are pretty close to those I give for the MTE software upgrade. The MTE software upgrade will give 280bhp and 420nm. on your particular car. Your question of the effect of a 19T on your car is really answered by MTE's figures for a '99 car which is fitted with the 19T (the only Volvo to have that very turbo as standard): they are 290bhp and 420nm. The MTE software installation on your car is £299 including VAT. So, with well written software the difference is just 10bhp with no torque increase for an outlay of at least £800 plus fitting for a 19T. The advantage of the 'sports' twin pipe exhaust on these AWD cars is not so great as you have to leave the first silencer after the cat, unless of course you want to cut it out. Then you have the problem of not being able to fit a special downpipe with cat as there is just no space to get it into the space available on a right hand drive AWD vehicle. If we have not already spoken I would like to point out that the MTE software is installed in your car by removing the ECU from the vehicle and attaching it to the MTE kit without opening it. There is no unsoldering, resoldering to be done or any use of stand alone devices. If you were to have the MTE installation I would recomend you verifying the results at Well Lane Turbo in Batley who have experience of some of my customers cars in your part of the world. I keep the Ferrita twin pipe stainless exhaust in stock in the UK. Please call me on 01462 894100 if I can help at all. Regards, Don.Norchi.

I think though that taking into account the existing turbo age, the gains would be more than the 10bhp. You won't be getting the full amount from your current turbo due to old age & wear so you might be 20bhp or so down compared to when your car was new.
Changing for a new 19T would possibly get this back, then add the extra due to the larger turbo on top. My 850R is currently running about 280bhp (crank) and it won't go any more. I've been advised that the 19T would be good not only for reclaiming the lost BHP but also for adding more on top! The problem is the cost. Say £650 for the 19T, £650 for the downpipe & race cat - then a remap and some labour etc too. Not cheap. |

Good morning Carpy,
You can get 300bhp at the crank with the right software together with turbo changes and a full exhaust system. Adding an ally. intercooler will help a great deal with sustained heavy use as will water injection, head work etc. From memory your car has as standard a 16T, the 18T falls very little short of the 19T and may help on the cost of changing downpipes. Turbo Technics Hybrid Garrett for these cars is also worthy of consideration. Some on this forum have good results with that TT unit and MTE software (t4,s and t5's). The 16T, albeit with angled flange, on my S60 T5 racecar sustains 325bhp or thereabouts in 2,3 and 4 hour races, but with a lot of specialist work and just some specialist parts, but is for that application at or near its limit, but the exhaust gas temp. gauge on the car shows readings well within limits......so, with good mapping your 16T, if in good nick, will get you a fair way. Regards, Don.Norchi.

Hello Georgy,
The MTE software that I install will give you 270bhp/405nm provided that your car is generally in good order. MTE offer a different map for the manual car that gives 285bhp/430nm. They produce these lower output maps to protect the auto.box in the long term....you can elect for the higher power map to be installed, but you cannot rely some shortening of the life or that box. I charge £295 including VAT to install the MTE software and I do it by removing the ECU and effecting the changes by plugging the MTE kit into the unopened ECU. My competitors all have to open this particular ECU and solder and desolder, fit carrier/protection boards etc. I can do the work pretty much anytime weekdays or weekends by arrangement. Regards, Don.Norchi.

Hi Carpy,If you are near to Slough on Sunday pop over to the Crooked Billet, there will be an array of tuned cars,
My car has the MTE map and Ferrita dual exit exhaust and even though it is a couple of hundred kg more than other T5's and R's it is still a quick car, You cannot fault the after sales care with choosing the MTE route,
