Default New XC90 D5 DPF

Hi Guys, I am interested in possibly buying a (second hand) XC90 next year.

The D5 would be my preferred engine. The only concern I have is the D5 DPF. I drive about 10-12k miles a year. My normal work commute is only 8 miles (14 min) one way, where the engine only barely gets warmed up. Out of work during spring and summer we would normally drive longer distances 45 min - 2 hr) regularly on days off.

I am interested in info about the DPF of the new XC90 D5. I believe the old XC90 was slightly sensitive to DPF problems. Has there been any reports about the new XC90 D5 DPF being any better?

Is my driving sufficient to cause no regular issues to the DPF of the D5?

There has never been a problem with XC90 DPF's old or new , they are very robust . If you are abusing them you get a "Soot Filter Full " message come up , this is NOT a fault .. The handbook will tell you to go for a 20 minute run at 50 mph for a regeneration to carry out . If you ignore the message you will go into limp mode and need to Pay a garage for attention .

I have owned 3 XC90 D5's and usually only do about 5 - 6 k miles a year with many short commutes of just 4 or 5 miles and never ever had an issue with the PDF, and have never even had a single message on display regarding it, there is nothing at all to worry about regarding the PDF, the XC90 is very reliable and the most practical of all the SUV's, the only gripe I have is mpg which is not very good especially around town which is where most of my driving is done, I hope the new XC90 I have on order is better but I know it will never get anywhere near the claimed mpg, my advice is if you want a good reliable practical and versatile SUV and dont mind less mpg than some others the Volvo XC90 is the best.

Thanks for the replies guys.

At least now I can seriously consider buying a new model XC90.

Would any one you know if the (from factory installed) swivel tow bar is possible to have that retro fitted to a used XC90?

Technically mine was retrofitted, was factory ordered but at the time factory didn't fit it, it was delivered to the dealers and they fitted it before I got it. They did a cracking job too, very happy.

Just to add my experience of the "soot filter full' warning light issue.

Today, I traveled to Manchester from Liverpool. 30 miles. Not fast or slow, RPM bout 2000 or so.

On the way home, MPG was awful, then I got (for the first time of ownership, 4months) the soot filter full warning.

I was on the motorway, revs again about 2000 and in less than 5 mins it went into limp mode. I drove home, Revs as much as I could 3000 or so. Turned it off, and the message had gone and the limp mode had too.

So, they do reset on their own, even after being in limp mode, it seems.
