The bell housings are not removable and a different bolt pattern.

I always wandered if the 'box from a newer shape LT35 would fit.
In thery it should bolt up to the block, as VW never change the bolt patterns, but the rest would have to be custom, the ratios are probably too low too.
That's the only real bad thing about the M90 - the bell housing and front casing are all one piece so you can't swap bell housings like you can with most boxes. You have to find the right one to fit your engine block.

Using the VW LT mk2 gearbox is a bit of lateral thinking but why not go the whole way and use the engine as well if you are doing a complete conversion from scratch. I'm a real big fan of the D24 but the straight-5 2.5 TDI is far more modern, powerful, economical and refined. With all those that slate the D24, you would have thought that somebody out there would have a go at this conversion. But like you say, the gearbox ratios might be too low and this is already a problem with D24 cars.

It has been done before, Kev.

Using a D5252 from an 850, still with a d24 M90 gearbox.
I seriously considered this before I put the d24 in the 960, but the complexity of the wiring put me off.
Can't remember anything else about it, was a few years ago now. Also can't seem to find it online.

Looks bloody sexy though!!

Another option would be to use a D5 and White block M90, for pretty much the same amount of work.

Hi Steve,

I was actually on about a straight engine/box swap from an LT mk2 as it's already longitudinal engine/rear drive so you don't have to find a D24 M90.

I do remember you recently suggested using the VW/Audi straight-5 from an 850 for a 900. I didn't realise that it had already actually been done. Many thanks for sharing those photos with all of us.

I think that Volvo really missed a trick by restricting this engine to the 850 rather than put this more modern unit in the 940/960 instead of the D24 in the later years. And they really shot themselves in the foot further by not offering the 960 mk2 with any diesel at all. I suppose things were a bit different in the 90's and demand for high spec diesel's was low. Strange thing was that it was Volvo that started it all in the first place with the 760 TD way back in '83......!

Yes, this one looks fantastic on the outside. I can see it's a bit of a hybrid as non-recessed wipers/shallow screen but with 960 mk2 wings, bumper and rub strips. Engine bay looks very tidy but I guess that the lack of clutter is down to a low spec car - no ABS, A/C, C/C.... Like you say sexy, especially that chin spoiler!

I'd be the first to say that it all sounds great but with electronic injection I totally agree with you in that you then have the added complexity of ECU and wiring compared to a D24.

And if you are prepared to bite that bullet, like you say, why not go for Volvo's own straight-5 which is an even better engine and you only have to find the slightly less rare white block M90 lol!

The chin spoiler in fact looks to be a 960/X70R hybrid front bumper, exactly like I was going to have made to go on the 960.

The lad that was going to do it for me is shutting up shop so to speak soon. Very sad.
If you want one making, let me know and I'll give him a shout.

Hi Steve,

BTW, many thanks for the offer of help sourcing a custom made front spoiler/bumper but
i) where I park off the road, it's approach has a slope. My 960 mk2 even with a standard spoiler grounds out - just as well it's only grey plastic. If I had any thing lower or body coloured it would soon get ruined!!
ii) I have a neighbour/mate who is a petrol-head and also a wizard at scratch building GRP car body parts.
