S80 MK11 D5 185 Geartronic What's Your MPG
Had my S80 MK11 D5 Geartronic 185 for just over a year and it has been service every year at Volvo Main Dealer. Just covered 63500 miles and the trip computer is showing 31-32 mpg on local and one 60 mile run per week. Not sure if I should be getting better MPG or is this average for the car.

That sounds about right, maybe a teeny bit low but not unusual for a 185 D5, especially an automatic. My XC is a little worse than that on a local run so you're probably doing ok. On my previous 127 mile a day commute I was getting about 37 mpg out of the car but that's 56mph a/c off empty road driving for 99% of that commute with a little town driving at a big hill first thing leaving home. Round town can get mid twenties but never been lower than 26 over a tank (and that was a Laura driving flat out with a broken throttle body tank...) so you're about right I'd say

V70 2.4d 163 does 31 mpg on average. It's thirst being its only drawback, its a great car otherwise, I might even push it to brilliant.
On thse forums, someone always posts that they get about 60 mpg. I like to think they are using a different size gallon to me! |

Yeah I don't see how, even a DRIVe one is just too big and heavy to get decent MPG. That said, there's a lovely 59 plate S80 1.6D for sale with lots and lots of toys at an eye catching price that'd go really well alongside the XC but then I'd enjoy the toys so much I wouldn't drive the XC, even though I can't watch the RES myself...

After years of driving Granada's, Mercs and jags that if you were lucky gave 20mpg and as bad as 14 mpg on short runs ! Moving to a P1 V70 LPT and getting 28 I was well impressed . My Ps v70 D5 was quite a bit better than my present P3 but for a big heavy car with loads of grunt its not bad . My manual gets 32.5 to 34 on average. I have had it up to 42 on long runs but its like driving on eggshells normal driving on long run gets about 38.5 so well pleased.
I'd say it was running about right, so your auto seems Ok on the fuel . The post that say they get 60plus MPG are dreaming . Enjoy. One thing that will help is a plug in chip . My son fitted one to his P2 S60 D5 and his fuel consumption improved by a few MPG until he used the extra performance then it dived. I'm glad he took it off though as insurance companies don't like them so it came off ,but it did make the car more economical during sensible driving .

Thanks for the replies I was just getting a little concerned with others posting high mpg results for their cars. The only thing I have decided to do is stop using supermarket fuel and for the last two fills I have used Esso & BP. Cannot justify the cost of using Premium Diesel at an extra 10p -15p a litre.

I Only ever use supermarket fuel and never had a problem . I do add Two stroke oil at 200:1 at every fill up . You really notice the difference

My 2wd XC70 manual returns 42/44 driving localy on A and B roads and over 50 on motorway runs. Towing the caravan low 30s and once 23 but that was 60mph into a stiff headwind. 2.4 D4 engine with polestar giving it 195 bhp. I drive sencably but not like a nun and blow the cobwebs out of the old girl once in a while. These are average figures taken from the on board computer.
