Default Problem with replacement Sat Nav DVD unit

2003/4 XC90 D5 AWD

Sat Nav hasn't worked since we bought the car second hand 2 years ago showing a 'Disc cannot be read" error and in the diagnostics screen of the RTI it was showing DVD error.

Tried different discs and opened up the unit to give it all a good clean, but to no avail.

I had resigned myself to putting up with it being broken and using a TomTom, but I stumbled upon someone breaking a similar model year XC90 so bought the DVD unit (believe this is called the MMM - is that correct>).

However, having installed the new unit I'm getting the following behaviour:

- DVD spins up ok and reads the disc as expected
- RTI screen pops up and shows the current location, maps, etc. so all appeared to be looking good.
- However about 10 to 20 seconds later the system shuts down and screen closes. Radio also cuts out very briefly.

My guess is that either the system software is incompatible, or else the DVD unit is paired with the rest of the system?

Can anyone shed any light on this, and whether a software update via DICE/VIDA would resolve this?

Thanks

Just move working mechanism to your old unit. 15 min job.

Thanks - did this repair over the weekend and as you say it didn't take long once I had both units open. Now have fully working Sat Nav.

For others looking to do the same:

- There are some instructions here: http://www.holmsten.se//volvoV70/RTI...ismantling.pdf on opening up the RTI unit which contains the DVD player. My units differed in some ways both externally and internally, but these instructions gave me a good idea of how it came apart.

- Rather than go to the bother of trying to replace individual components in the DVD drive (motor, laser, etc), I just to took the dvd drive in it's entirety.

- This a self contained component, so just had to disconnect it from the main circuit board and then swap in the working one from the unit I bought from the breakers.

So, if you can find a donor unit this is a fairly cost effective repair and negates any problems around matching a new unit back to the car, etc.

Saw your old post about working on the sat nav main unit and thought that you might be able to help. All that I need to know is: how the hell do I get the main unit out of the glove compartment. There is no play on the loom and without having surgery to put additional joints in my wrist and fingers, I can't release the 3 connectors. Been working on this problem, on and off, for the past 3 months. Please help. Thanks Ron.

This is the best answer

You have an old unit, correctly programmed for your car, and accepted by your car, but where the DVD mechanism is bust

You have a new unit, not programmed for your car, and not accepted by your car, but where the DVD mechanism is OK.

Moving the DVD mech from new to old unit is definitely the easiest and fastest and cheapest solution.
No programming or coding necessary, no visit to dealer necessary.
