850 1995 Engine blown Repair v Sell for scrap?
I am a first time user of the VOC forum so here goes.
I have owned an 850 GLE 20V Auto estate since new. I bought it in 1995 and it now has 276k miles on the clock. The transmission was replaced 5 years ago and runs like new. The car has been excellent and money wise owes me nothing. It is generally in good condition and I would like to keep it if I can. Unfortunately last week it would appear it did one journey too far and I am advised that the engine now needs replacement. I am told that to replace the engine and fitting will cost between £2-£3k. This probably makes it a non viable option but I would like to consider the alternatives. It seems too good to sell to the scrappy. Does anyone know where I can get the engine replaced at a reasonable price i.e. less than the figures I mentioned. I think it would have to be a recon if it is to be a reasonable cost and whoever fits it needs to know what they are doing. Clearly in its weakened state driving too far is not an option. I live in Essex. Any assistance or advice greatly appreciated. Malcjon |

Oh dear
Oh dear that is a shame especially as you say the rest of the car is in good condition. At the risk of sounding presumpteous, I am sure Jod will see your thread and he lives in Essex so he probably will know the best and cheapest way to advise you. Good luck anyway.

Hi,
Welcome to the forums and I hope you enjoy your stay here.. And that you get the info you need too..! Sorry to hear of your problems. That figure does sound a wee bit on the steep side.. Even a reconned unit doing a striaght swap will be less than that.. However, much depends on what is wrong with the engine. What happened and what were you doing when things went wrong? What warnings, sounds and crunches were made? It could be a rebiuld will sort this, and about £1000 to £1500. Maybe less. Des. . .

Hard luck, but i know what you mean when you have a problem but you know th ecar is too good to let go. My 2p worth. As CTC Network mentions, that price you have been quoted does seem high and you will be able to get a replacement engine for less than that!
(Several years back now, the engine on my mums VW Golf needed repairs, and I just went to a place in birmingham who fitted an uprated bigger reconditioned engine for me for about £600 ish IIRC and never had any problems with it since). I'd start off by looking in the Yellow Pages/www for places that specialise in reconditioned engines and get some ball park quotes. For the amount you will be looking at, this may be your best bet, as this is better than a used engine. This way you know roughly what sort of price to pay. Also may be worth looking up some Volvo breakers like to see what they quote you for an engine; http://www.salvogroup.co.uk/ http://www.volvospares-uk.com/index.htm |
