In a new XC90. Hence there reason I posted in this section.

Kev78 has been doubting the reliability of the new D5 and I was wondering how many miles people had clocked up.

6,000 miles and loving it. If there is a road noise problem, don't notice it on the type of driving we mostly do, cross country on B roads.

We have done 5800 Miles but unfortunatly as you know we have many outstanding problems with the car such as;

The tyre noise on the 20" wheels with the Continental's ,the noise is mainly on the coarse road surfaces and on patches of the motorway and even on some of our local roads. This problem is also mentioned on Swedespeed. This problem is not widespread in The Netherlands or Germany as most models sold there are the T8 running on different set of tyres. Volvo UK now recommend to reduce the tyre pressures to front 2.4 bar and rear 2.2 bar , tried it but little or no difference but what is it doing to my tyres and braking distances ?

The leather dashboard needs replacing ,we are not the only ones ,it seems it is a problem in Italy and America as well. We and the others do not trust Volvo do replace the dash without causing more problems.

The rear air suspension bellows were not correctly fitted at the factory.

Unbeknown to us the rear parking sensors never worked needless to say that I reversed into a Disco , damaged both our top and bottom bumper. Replaced the bumper with the skid plate , must admit it looks better now with the car being debaged.

We do like the car as a car but just not "Our" car at the moment , it has taken all the pleasure away owning it. We never had any problems with both our XC60's.

I haven't been doubting the reliability.

Volvo need to prove it after the D4 though.

I doubt the claimed MPG. Many owners are getting nowhere near it.

I don't like it because it's a cheap sounding, unsuitable engine for a premium SUV.

Have a look on Reevoo. Many owners are very unhappy.

Well Kev how else would I interpret your posts? Here are quotes from them about VEA engines D4 and D5.

At least they give the customer engine options (various 4,6 and 8 cylinder) and don't build every model on the same production line with Lego chassis and cheap unreliable 4 pots.

Seems they cost a fortune to maintain and repair regardless of manufacturer and problems seem much more common once they have a few years and miles under their belt than with petrol engines.

I'd be very upset if I broke down because of a problem part volvo are aware of and have a replacement for.

Seems like volvo don't have a fix for the issue.

Which is a bit worrying.

It's not looking good.

The fact they are sending technical teams from Sweden suggests that they don't fully understand the problem.

How many of the engine components are made in China?

I have a feeling Volvo's reputation may take a hammering over the next few years.

Their first effort with 181bhp is hardly reliable.

I was amazed to read today in another section of this forum that there is a d4 fwd XC90 for some markets.

Surely they should solve the issue before fitting the D4 to a even more expensive car.

The XC90 is huge and the new D5 isn't up to the job.

Raw power, small engines and reliability do not go together.

The problem is you tend to get most of the power in one big 'dollop' low down in the rev range. Especially with a diesel. And the engines tend to be short lived and not as reliable.

The car is not fit for purpose and the performance is nowhere near what it should be.

It's a disgrace Volvo are still selling these cars without having a fix for the problem.

Vw may have cheated on emissions but at least they are reliable.

The D4 is anything but, Volvo clearly don't have a solution. Yet they are still selling to customers and dealers deny there is a issue

Volvo are selling cars that are unreliable, don't have a fix and deny there is a issue.

They are obviously clueless and may have a engine with a major design flaw.

I wouldn't be worried if I had a VW diesel but I'd worry if I had a D4 or new D5.
I know you think I am a fanboy and that is true, but it amuses me that you would come onto a forum created by dedicated Volvo Owners Club members and paid for by Volvo Owners Club members and be surprised to find people who actually are fans of the cars. I've been a Club member since before the internet was formed and all posts were by letter in "Volvo Driver" the club magazine.

I think the directors who created the site have done a fine job and the forum provides a very useful free service for owners of Volvo cars. (unless you are a club member that is as our membership fees pay the running costs)

I primarily see it as a technical forum for helping people source parts and fix problems with their cars. For good or bad though there are relatively very few posts about mechanical issues with the new cars these days. Sensors seem to be the main problem that comes up, and that seems to be suspect as the main source of EGR blamed issues on the D4 now as far as I can see.

Your quoted comments above did lead me to search on reliability issues for the new D5 engine, hence the question, as I could find no adverse comments on the forum about reliability problems with the new D5.
