Default Fan/blower motor works intermittently

Hi there!
The internal fan motor on My 2001 V70 starts and stops intermittently. When I start the car from cold with the fan turned up full, it usually doesn't start. After driving 2-10 minutes, the fan starts for a few seconds and stops again. This continues with the fan starting and stopping regardless if it is turned up full or to half and when it starts it can run for 2-10 seconds, sometimes longer.
When it occasionally works a little longer I have good heating or cooling.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Paul

Hello putte76

My money is on the fan or controller being faulty. They are all part of the fan unit, the controller is on top.

However, it could be a fault in the climate control unit, the unit in the centre console.

A code read should reveal something, but it's not guaranteed. It would need to be done with VIDA or a PPC unit, both of which can read codes from the fan and climate units.

Unless you can read codes yourself or phone a friend it can be an expensive job if you go to a dealership. It may be that it's easier to start by swapping out the fan for a known working unit and go from there.

The climate control unit isn't difficult to change but you have to be certain of one from a similar spec. model and of a very close age to your car.

If it's noisy, the fan bearings might be seizing. Used unit not expensive on Ebay, look for one that's not rusted at the retaining clip in the center of the fan blades
