There is an option to have a switch that turns the passenger side airbag off, if you have a child seat in the front. This switch is on the passenger side of the dash, you can only see it with the door open. Don't know if this displays a warning message if it's off?

But to answer your question, if the red airbag warning light stays on it should be an MOT fail. You can have the SRS message and the yellow triangle or no light, this shouldn't fail. Many things can cause it, but the most common that catches people out is removing the climate panel with the battery connected.

If there is no true fault it will reset with Volvo's diagnostic tool Vida/DiCE, and some of the better handheld scanners can reset it.

Definitely if you are buying from a dealer you should insist the warning lights/messages operate correctly and don't indicate a fault.

You could try grabbing his nuts very tightly and tell him your just undertaking a basic lie detector test, sans removing his boxers!!.....walk away, nae run.
