Retro fitting turbos
HI,
This is my first post on the site, and this wuestion has probably been answered a hundred times, but I cant find it.... Can you retro fit a low pressure turbo to a 2.5 10v v70 (1998) Also, if I fit a stainless steel exhaust with a 'straight through' silencer, will I have to get the ECU remapped? Sorry for being a Dunce.... I can just about chance a brake disc! |

compression ratios on naturally aspirated engines are higher than turbo engines....
a t5 HPT is around 8.5-1 a 2435 lpt is around 9.0-1 yours is around 10-1 i figure it could be done, but you would have to run really low boost at a guess.... & it would require alot of work... flog your motor & buy a T5 |

I totally agree with PNut on this one; it would be more financially viable to buy yourself a T5 or something similar, rather than retrofit a turbocharger. In my experience, if you really want to go the whole hog on an NA car, then the best gains per £ spent are to be had from nitrous!!!

"+T" conversions are popular on 740s, especially in the US, as finding clean turbo cars is tricky, and as long as you keep the boost pressure down, the compression doesn't hurt.
On a V70...I agree....sell and buy a turbo if you want one. You should be alright with the stock map with a performance exhaust. Older cars with 'air flow' rather than 'air mass' controlled fuel systems stuggle to compensate for modifications properly, but the more modern systems (early 90s onwards) are more forgiving. I worry about the true safety (in terms of longevity) of running an off-the-shelf 'remap' designed for a standard spec car (but with elevated boost, etc) on a car with a bigger turbo, etc...but people do it, and I'm not aware that anyone has broken anything doing this. The suppliers claim it's 'safe', but you won't achieve the full potential your car has to offer in terms of power. I'm specifically speaking about the 'chips' for 2/7/940s with LH-Jetronic 2.4 now. cheers James |
