I had a problem with the lower joint seized. I replaced that but the rack also needed doing. I had the old rack reconditioned and re fitted for about £100. No problems after.

Fitted my dim and its still faulty. So contacted Lukas at volvodiagnostic to get it repaired again. :-( driving car back from work and I'm pretty positive theres something on the suspension causing the steering issue like worn wishbone bush or worn track rod ends or a mixture of them all. The power steering pump is definitely needing replaced as its whining it face of now. Like the bearings are gone init or its dry! Gonna have a good look under the bonnet tomorrow then pop along to upullit and possibly get a second hand power steering pump. Also jackvthe car up and get a big screw driver and test all the bushes etc. Move everything see if there's any obv play. Also my stype suffered from worn steering rack bushes, will have a look at them.
Fairly disappointed ATM as been working hard and I had hoped that the dash problem was fixed. But hey Hoy onwards and upwards. Oh and need to get the engine hesitation thing looked at too! I heard about the engine mounts issue so will check all that and then some.......will there be enuf time in the day! Lol |

Cluster problem solved by reseating power windows unit connections in drivers door. Engine hesitation still under investigation, replaced power steering pump, steering still the same. So assume it's suspension problem.

Steering rack
Hi there.
As I said earlier, your description of 'lumpy' steering is just what I had on my 2000 S80. I was losing fluid from the reservoir but not on the garage floor so assumed it was seeping into the bellows on the rack. When I took it off, found the bottom UV joint on the steering column very stiff in one plane. In the end, had to take it off to free it up. Replaced rack and the problem was solved. Trouble was, did the replacement rack or the freed up UV solve the problem? In my post mortem, I decided that the UV wouldn't have given me the intermittent lumpy feel that I was experiencing so am convinced it was the rack that was at fault. I don't think any other suspension component would cause the steering to show these symptoms |
