Moisture ingress
Hi guys. As a newbie on here, i hope i don't infringe any protocols in this post, if i do i apologise in advance.
I have a Volvo V50 Sport D (E4). I've had it for about a year and it's my third Volvo, i like the make, much prefer them to BM's, Audi's which i've had in the past. My problem is, periodically my instrument panel, speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge, temperature sensor etc all just shut down, i get spurious fault alarms appearing ' air bag service required' ( it isn't) 'braking system failure.....' etc all of which are false alarms, they flash up for a few seconds then disappear, the windows won't operate, and the central locking plays up. I'm told by an auto electrician that it is as a result of water ingress into the ECU and it is a 'common fault' on this model. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Were you able to resolve it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi
Try cleaning with ipa all the electrical connectors on the CCM which is located behind the glovebox. you will want to disconnect the battery and let the ccm go to sleep first. CCM has to be moved to change the pollen filter and other members have reported problems Mark |

Also invest in a product called DEOXIT. They do Deoxit D5 as a cleaner and corrosion remover and they also do Deoxit gold for after its cleaned to protect and chemically improve the connections. Its not massively cheap stuff but its spot on for connectors and used in the aircraft industry for dirty connectors! If it is water in the ecu then you might want to open it up and clean it with some IPA. Do the connectors first obviously. This guide might help you- https://www.flickr.com/photos/qtphot...7632421923643/

Cleaning the contacts is good, but, if you're getting dampness faults, where is the water coming from?
Do you have a sunroof? The Volvo sunroof drains typically clog, letting water leak from the base of the "A" pillars. (The ECU is directly under the right "A" pillar on US cars - don't know for RHD cars.) If this is happening, your carpets will also probably have a lot of water in the 1 1/2" foam underneath. It's quickest just to pull the seats and dry the carpets separately. |

I'd check where the water is coming from, my D5 had the same fault and ended up with a new control module which wasn't cheap! The water was coming from the sunroof drain on the nearside which had come apart. ended stripping the car right out and getting it dry.
