Default Oil in water

Actually in coolant sorry!

Black sludgy oil deposits in reservoir, no signs of water in oil. This is a manual version so no oil of any kind through the radiator (as far as I can see), I cant find an oil cooler so assume head gasket (hope not though..).

Am I correct that there is no oil cooler on this engine (or have I not looked hard enough?)
Any other reasons for the coolant contamination other than cooler?

Any ideas please?

Thanks
Adam

There is an oilcooler/heatexchanger on this engine its right behind the oilfilter wich is screwed on it

And its also the most likely cause for the oil in the coolingsystem if its leaking
With a running engine the oilpressure gets higher than the coolantpressure and the oil get pressed into the coolingsystem where the oil gets trapped in the highest point :the expantion vessel
when the engine is shut down the oilpressure is gone ,but the coolant system has some pressure and can press smaller amounts coolant back in the oilsystem
those small amounts could vapor off with long drives but the ethylene component reacts with the oil and creates hard particles wich can harm the engine
Headgasket is less likely because the oilchannels is pressureless returnoil to the sump trough the big bores besides the cilinders
and hass less pressure than than the coolant
With headgasketfailures its more likely to get coolant in the oil than oil in the coolant

What to do:

Replace the oil/coolant heatexchanger , change the oil , suck off the oil from the expantion vessel a few times after driving till it gets a lot less
Then buy forte biodegreaser drive with it a day and then flush the coolingsystem and fill it again with coolant then after a few weeks the last droplets of oil gets transported to the expantionvessel , suck that off to and all is well

Great advice thanks.

Any tips on where to by a new oil cooler/exchanger?
Cheapest I can find in France is E300 which is twice the cost of a radiator!

(engine is 2.5TDI D5254T)

Maybe second hand at a scrapyard its less relaible but if its real cheap its worth the gamble
Or maybe a new general aftermarket oilcooler/heatexchanger wich can be adapted with a different oilfilter and couplings

Hi

Try SKANDIX http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts...ngine-oil/741/ looks like 69 euros + postage.

This is the one for the D5252T (audi) engine - as far as I know the 'D5254T' engine doesn't exist - it was a typo that has never been corrected!

Hope this helps

John

D5252T is the older 5 pot audi engine,

Oil cooler is next to oil filter,

D5244T is the 5 pot D5 engine,

Oil cooler bolted to back of sump near drain plug
