Thanks, that makes the job a lot easier ;-)

A few weeks ago I bought a 200k V70 D5 with the AW55-50SN box. The previous owner was told that it could not be driven and needed a new box.

I changed the atf using the Gibbons method (filthy black oil and large deposit on magnetic sump plug) and have now done 4000 miles and it's going still going well ......... that is in 3rd gear and above. Kickdown works, and boost is huge now I've replaced a leaking vacuum hose and the leaking front engine mount. So no more engine service warnings.

After about 2000 miles, and giving it a bit more stick it started to bang on changes from 1-2 and 2-3. Everything else works normally.

So then I tried the Lucas additive. It had a very short term effect (or did I imagine it?) if any, and it's now back as it was.

Sometimes you can accelerate and it will change perfectly smoothly. Other times it bangs severely. It really depends on throttle position and most times I can avoid it happening by being careful. But then when you forget, and you want to pull out quickly in traffic, bang! Ouch!

So having read all the info I can, and watched all the youtube clips I've come to the same conclusion as others: that the solenoids are blocked (with sludge of tiny bits of metal because the solenoids are magnets ) and sticking and need removing and cleaning or replacing altogether.

I plan to buy this Transgo kit as the next least cost attempt at a solution;

So it's about £60 with postage and is a bit of a gamble but far cheaper than the alternatives, Has anyone here tried it?

Hi Keith, got my S80 cheap as the seller thought it needed a new box, have used it for 2 years now and not got any worse, I have recently changed 3 litres of the atf using a suction tool via the dipstick opening and it seems a lot better, plan to do more changes on a regular basis, bought 20 litres for £47 from the German on eBay.
I did not think that the additive would have a long term effect on a high mileage box, and your experience seems to confirm this.
Very interested in how you get on with the new solenoids, and the price seems very good compared to Rostra ones, guess they will need some adjustment if fitted into an old valve body, this other gearbox related thread is a good read!!

Please keep us posted with your progress, think I will be doing something with the valve body next.....

Hi similar issues to what I had. Changing the solenoids worked for me well improved it does click now and again
That kit basically involves stripping the solenoids apart which i know other people have done with success
