Front Screen Washers.
The rear-wash thread has led me to enquire about the front washers. The wipers always work before fluid flows, which seems wrong, as dirt could scratch the screen. Is that as it should be or do I need to replace a valve, and if so, which one?

Mine do this, I've always put it down to the fluid falling back down into the resevoir rather than being kept under pressure in the tubes. Have you checked the hose for leaks or air getting in anywhere?

I think it's inevitable with a combined switch. Electricity flows faster than water, so the wiper starts up before the water arrives.
I prefer cars that have a separate washer button, so you can soak the screen before starting the wiper. |

You need a new non-return valve found in the rhs of the boot where the washer tube goes up the tail gate pillar.
This on a 1989 245 GL. Later one may be different BrianH |

That is for the tailgate screen. The OP is talking about the windscreen. There might be a similar valve at the front or one could be fitted to help out with this problem. Halfords have these valves.

I've had a few problems with Halfords 1-way valves (yes, I had fitted them the right way round! ). I'd suggest getting Volvo originals if swapping these.

Hundreds of them in scrapyards. Just go and get one off a breaker car. I know that all S40's and V40's have them under the bonnet liner.
