Default Headlight switch

My v40 has the headlights on all of the time, even when the light switch is turned to the off position. They will turn off when the switch is moved to the sidelight position.

Thinking it was the switch that was at fault, I replaced it with a secondhand unit (thanks Antz!) but I still have the same problem. Did both switches have the same problem or is there something else at fault? Or do these cars just have this as a 'feature'?

TIA

Day Running Lights (DRL) will be ON when on ON - 12o'clock. ON when OFF 9 o'clock and Side is side at arount 10:30. (Phase 2)
So maybe some one has been at the wiring? There is a way to turn them off. So maybe it was done in the past and the another owner rewired it.

You should have asked first....

To turn DRL's on/off

put light switch to the Center position , (sidelights > Green LED ON)
Switch ignition key to position II
Pull Main beam lever towards you and Hold it there,
Turn light switch to 0
release main beam lever

DRL should now be "OFF"

If you want to reverse this, repeat the same process, but I doubt you ever will...

Sounds like its doing exactly what its meant to.

If its a phase two then if you have the manual then you can look up how to turn them off.

If not then a quick google will turn up a thread of how to do it.

It goes something like
  • Ignition off/light switch off
  • Ignition to position II
  • light switch to side light position
  • pull indicator stalk towards you for about 2 seconds
Not sure if you have to turn the key off to complete it or not.
You can tell its worked by either the lights going off with the switch or the green led goes out whereas with DRLs enabled it stays on in all positions.

That is from memory and my memory is terrible so no promises that what I've said is correct.

Edit - My memory is so bad that by the time I came back to this forgotten half written post it had already been answered!
