Default Diesel Mayo

My 2.0D seems to have a little bit of Mayo in the oil filler tube that appears even though the car is "warming up" every day. I've cleaned this out but it appears again a few days later (although after a long 200+ mile journey it didn't for a little while).

It's not drinking coolant so I wondered if there a fault with the breather or oil filler cap. I'm not too familiar with these engines and haven't yet removed the plastic engine cover, etc. to see where these things vent.

Does anyone know where the breather is, or experienced this before? I don't know if the colder weather means that it's more likely to happen.

thanks in advance.

Last time I looked I noticed this on mine (probably early December) and it had about 6000 miles on it

I cleaned it and looked the other day and didnt see it again but have only done about 500 miles, some short trips, some to work (approx 25 mile).

hope this helps

Thanks, don't seem to get some much of it myself lately so perhaps it's just a short term thing.

Little bit off putting as previous VW diesels haven't ever done this!!

Any emulsified oil will as you say be due to water mixing with the oil.
You are quite right to check for coolant loss, but I would also ask what type of use does the car get? If you use it for short stop start work then the oil and engine will never get hot enough to burn off any condensation that will form within the engine cases, especially during cold (relatively)winter months.

Give the car a good run at motorway speeds at least once a week to get the oil nice and hot. If you can't do this and the car is used for short trips, then my advice would be to get the oil changed at no more than 5k miles, otherwise you may reduce life of engine.

By the way my 2.0D E4 is only driven for long trips and I've no sign of emulsified oil.

Hope this puts your mind at rest.
