Question K-Jetronic Recommissioning

I've been trying to get a K-Jetronic B27E running after a few years in the barn. With fresh fuel and spark confirmed and lots and lots of cranking, it eventually ran for a couple of minutes or so - I held it at around 2500rpm, it seemed to be running on all cylinders and came up to temperature as normal. However it wouldn't idle and stalled without the accelerator depressed.

I did eventually get it to run again (it would only start after being left for a minute or so - thought it may be flooded so cranked it for a few seconds without the fuel pump fuse, but that didn't make any difference) - however, the revs were rising and falling on a steady throttle and it stalled when left to idle. Since that I haven't been able to get any sign of ignition from it.

I'm assuming that the fuel line and filters are OK given that it ran for a couple of minutes (but I will check at the filter) and there is still a spark - any suggestions as to what to check next?

eBay? No, it's something I've had for nine or ten years.

Default Problem solved - maybe

You should change your injector seals ASAP - it's easily and cheaply done and will have a transformative effect; maybe pull your cold start injector too...

There are no fuel leaks - what effect could new seals make?

Had thought the cold start injector might not have been working, but it won't start when hot either.

Someone had put an add on ebay asking for help with a similar issue and again the car had stood for a similar amount of time.

The K jet system is probably gummed up where the fuel has gone off. I would start with giving a good clean and buy a couple of fuel filters. Replace the existing on and then after a short time replace that as it could be getting blocked up with deposits from the tank

Gummed-up lines was my first thought (until it started). Don't much want to have to strip the metering head - I'll take the line out of the filter off to see what's happening as a first step - thanks.

Two relatively easy things to try. One is to clean up / de-gum around the air metering flap; the other is to check the idle air bypass valve (tubular thing bolted to head, with pipes into the top and bottom, and a half-moon flap inside).

Default injector seals again and another thought....

if you can get it running spray wd40 on each injector in turn, if the revs rise then they need doing. Agree with everyone else's comments - and would like to add that 240's seem really sensitive to rotor arm/cap problems - have you checked/replaced?

Hi there was a pretty good series on K-jet fault finding in recent copies of Practical Performance Car. If you send me a PM I can scan useful bits if required

Also the company below can help with parts...for a price...

http://www.kmipetrolinjection.co.uk/...K-Jetronic.htm

I was planning on using them for my Renault.

Idle air valve stuck closed will cause low/no idle, but that wouldn't explain rising/falling revs on steady throttle - could be that the fuel distributor (metering head) needs a service.

Useful link here...
