All designed to give more short term and wear out quicker so you go and buy new.
Atriction=Trade it in and buy new and so it goes on. So much for the carbon footprint. My memory radar is reminding me that I read somewhere years ago that there were plans to make a throw away plastic engine the idea being that you just booked into a garage and had it exchanged like you would a tyre but we have yet to see it. I think it may have been NSU(now defunct but thanks for the rotary ****el engine) some one like that, some one on here will remember it. The new wave disk engine concept looks interesting though (check out futureworld.org if you're interested)
