Check out this walkthrough - Changing gear linkage bushes

Was a real help for me when I tried to explain to the mechanic what I needed done and why.

Hi,

has anyone got the gearlinkage diagram that they could email me? The guide is great but only shows the front bush, the diagram will hopefully help me locate the others.

(I cant pm 4 forty for it as the forum wont let me until i've got more than 30 posts.)

With my 2003 S40 GDI have difficulty getting into 1st and (to a lesser extent) 2nd, when changing down. I don't think there's excessive play on the gear stick (although as I've had the car for 7 years I may not have noticed the change). From what I remember, the problem started after I had the gearbox oil changed (70,000 miles, from memory). Someone once told me that using a different grade of oil could cause, or fix, this problem. Has anyone else had this experience? As the main problem is on changes down, maybe it's a synchro problem - would this be affected by the oil? Any other suggestions?

Hi 4 forty,

My son has just bought an X reg Volvo S40 1.6 with 116K mileage. Ive just driven it and he seems to have the same problem described in this thread. Please could you mail me a parts diagram. Also, could you please say if the repair is to be done inside the car or underneath.
