Default Noise from engine bay when not running

A couple of times since having the car I've heard a noise from the engine bay when I've stopped and got out. Sounds like a very loud fan. Runs for about 5 minuets then stops. Hard to believe it's the radiator fan running so long this weather. Anyone else hear this noise? It's a D2 by the way.

Probably related to the DPF cleaning cycle.

I understand that the DPF cleaning cycle uses extra fuel which causes the engine to get hotter so the ambient temp probably has little effect. If you switch off during this cycle or shortly after it has finished the engine cooling fan may still be on. Do you do many short trips, traffic etc? as this may cause more DPF cleaning cycles and hoyyer engine. You may also experience the engine running a bit rough during a cycle.
With no temp gauge (what were Volvo thinking here?) it can be hard to tell.

Not many short trips.
