Anyhow, after a time, I took to retaliating with quotations from the Goon Show. That got him really perplexed: "How old are you..." Eventually I put him out of his misery by explaining about BBC Classic Comedy tapes (and yes, that dates me!).

Let's put it this way, I'm substantially older than my 740 - so no longer a whippersnapper, more's the pity...
Your 740 is a mere babe in arms, or at least a juvenile, so you're just pretending to be a grown-up! All this talk of 'going to work' or being 'in the lab' and such like, you're really one of the students aren't you? Just own up, there's nothing wrong with being a whippersnapper, it's a condition that improves with time!

Well, I am told that I used to remember ...
I'm afraid I remember all those, though the Grace Archer clip has been played so often I don't know if my memory of it is from a more recent broadcast. All the shows you mention are of course frequently on Radio4extra so we can have a good wallow in nostalgia!

The current lot of students are young enough to be my own kids!! Even the PhD students are, mostly. Indeed, the current lot of u/grads are younger than my 740.

For the avoidance of doubt, by the way, I never claimed to be grown-up - just middle-aged!!
