Volvo Warranty - Good Buy???
In the New Year I'm taking delivery of a new V70 D5 Manual.
I'm considering taking the £500 three year service contract and also the Volvo extended warranty. I had a P1 (Audi 5 pot diesel) which needed a replacement top engine and diesel pump when the timing belt snapped at 75K and currently run two P2's, a 237K T5,which has never been a pick of bother and a 90k V70 AWD R. Both had Volvo extended warranty, which saved me a fortune on the R (New bevel gear, Dual mass flywheel, clutch, two 4C suspension struts and various sensors) The more complex the car the more appears to go wrong and cost more to replace I expect to do approx. 10k/year so new car warranty will age expire before mileage. Comments/ suggestions appreciated Cheers Bob |

It appears you have answered your own question . If I bought my Volvos new new and had those expenses in the first three years as you have I would be disappointed to say the least . I buy mine at around 3 to 5 years old and have never had a big problem so the expensive faults have probably been fixed ,fingers crossed. For £500 when buying a new car its not a lot more for the extended peace of mind .

Sorry, I have not explained myself well at all and English is my first language lol.
In my opinion, If I was buying a "new" V70 T5 I doubt I would splash for an extended warrantee - nothing goes wrong. My AWD R is a lot more complicated and the warranty saved me a packet. The question I suppose I should have asked is - Are there any weaknesses in the V70 D5's which would make a warranty a sound investment if keeping the car beyond 5 years. I know P2's well but P3 are new to me. Cheers Bob |

Just my opinion but I don't think the p3 are quite as good quality as the p2 cars. The p3 has been around now for a few years so should be sorted and as reliable as any decent car. The D5 engine is a strong unit albeit a bit agricultural sounding in the P3 ? The P2 was much quieter. Also the fuel consumption is poorer compared to the P2. Main other grumble seems to be auto box problems . My sons 2009/10 model is not the best gear change ,he complains of the usual hesitancy around 3rd gear. I am running a 2007/8 P3 D5SE Lux manual. It has 104k and still drives like a much newer car with no problems.
I don't think £500 ,when buying a new model is a lot to pay for peace of mind but why not shop around and try to get it included in the deal . If you don't ask ?

My car will be hitting it's 5th year anniversary next month. I would have loved to renew the Volvo Selekt Warranty last year but didn't have the £750 and as it was already over 100,000miles it wasn't elegible. As it is, it's been faultless this year!
The previous year I did have both front suspension top mounts replaced, an electric window control unit, rear windscreen wiper one way valve (didn't make a difference in the end) and IIRC, a new BLIS mirror fitted under warranty. |

Take the extended warranty, but, do it at 2.5yrs. Why pay best part of 500 up front, for something which doesn't kick in until after 3 years later.
As you know, you can add it at any time prior to 3 years/60k being reached. I think for what I was quoted, it was cheap and worth it. |

I've just received the offer to extend the warranty on my 2011 (MY12) V70 D3 for a 4th year/60,000 for £395. or 4th year/80,000 for £445. By comparison Warranty Direct want £376 (not sure of their mileage limit) The benefits under the Volvo offer are somewhat better and the claims procedure more straightforward.
Since I've had well over £2000 worth of warranty work carried out on the Driver Alert System in recent months I'll e spending £395. Frank |
