Default Solid white lines good...

This is an example of why solid white lines should be used in the outer two lanes from the the 300m board of a motorway exit (and enforced with cameras - if you must use cameras, put them to good use):

The driver survived, lucky to be alive and is now facing prosecution. I bet the truck driver had a few sleepless nights after that.

Agree, but they have them after the Dartford River Crossing Tunnels to stop people in the right hand lanes taking the first exit and they barely work. Sure it would help though.

Shows how quickly things can go wrong.

She was lucky to survive that one. I drive on the motorways around London and often see close misses with people diving across lanes. Last one was yesterday when a van cut up the car car in front of me. He reacted by doing an emergency stop from 60 to 10mph. Glad I was at a sensible distance, but still had to break hard.

Even if they did change the markings to solid white lines I can't see people abiding by it. We all see laws broken everyday, and this would just be another one that only the concencious drivers would follow. if you were being honest, she knew she shouldn't cut across lanes like that anyway, we all know that wasn't sensible or acceptable driving so chances are if there were white lines instead, she would have done it anyway!

Good point, that's why I added the use of cameras.
It only takes a few prosecutions and word gets around.

Of course, at peak times traffic will be queuing to get off the motorway this may encourage some redesign of junctions.

The markings could be reversed at the otherside of the junctions to discourage the Lewis Hamilton wannabes from carving up traffic getting from the slip road to the 'fast' lane.

In Holland there are solid white lines coming onto the motorways to try and stop this, cannot move onto the next lane till the lines are broken, not saying it works but maybe helps. The scary thing there is Rotterdam ring road at peak times can be like the M25 but going much faster, we had a problem in the third lane and put on our flashers, doing 60, was amazed at how everyone moved to let us onto the emergency lane without slowing the traffic, and when we got sorted let us back in.

Thumbs up

I favour the m5/6 method of keeping 2 chevrons apart.

It seems to work very well and keeps the traffic moving allowing for both traffic merging and lane changing because what ever lane your in or whatever speed your doing you are still 2 chevrons apart.

Better than 70mph stop 70 mph stop 70 mph stop 70------you get my gist.

That video is pretty horrific, it was bad enough with the first crash let alone the second.... Its amazing she survived.
