Hi
To DickyB V70R
Its not the back of the Steering wheel, rubbing on the dash a little is it.. Mine does this sometimes, But only in cold weather. I know its this because when i spray it with Silicon the rubbing disapears...???? What do you mean "rubbing on the dash"??? Some more details where it is? Where shall I spray? Thanks |

Relubricated and still there
I re-lubricated everything there - and the noise is still there....
No idea what else I can do (the only is going to volvo garage to investigate once again) |

Is the noise just a squeek when the wheel is turned (possibly in one direction in particular).
Mine makes a noise after every 30000 miles or so, when i get it serviced i ask them to clean it out. Apparently there is a 'design flaw' with the steering columns and they can collect dirt which needs to be scraped out every so often. I've been told by the place i get it serviced that i could do it myself as just need to remove column cover and give it a good clean out - haven't done it myself yet though as last time they only charged about £3 (on invoice as steering column lubricant) don't know if they actually did put anything on it or just cleaned the dirt away but for £3 its not worth me messing around doing it. As i say, every 30,000 same thing happens! |

Thanks for that. Could you tell me a bit more where and what to clean? Cheers |

It actually rubs on the cowling behind the steering wheel.

The column is one tube which turns inside another which doesn't, if it makes a noise it would be the bushes I would think and perhaps your garage just lubricates them, well as much of them as can be accessed. Either that or they grease the universal joints below the column, but I wouldn't say there's a design flaw on any of this unless it exists on most other cars! I suppose the ideal solution is new bushes, but they do not seem to be available separately and a new steering column is £130 or so and that isn't even for an OEM part. Pete |

Pete,
Understand your comment and I wouldn't generally have said it is a design problem myself (having not owned or had any experiance with S40's apart from the one I own), however I normally service my car at an ex-volvo dealer (which was due to be closed, but was bought out by an independant so stil specialises in Volvo) and when I told them about the noise they said it was a common problem. I asked if there was a part that could be replaced so as to stop the problem and was told that no parts were damaged and that replacing 'bits' wouldn't fix it and the problem would still occur. It was at this point that I asked if I could sort it and was told to remove the cover of the column and give it a good clean which should fix the problem. If noone else has had this problem then obviously it is not as common as I was led to believe! Marcus |
