So you know if the estate axle is good to go there Dave? If it is and you're happy for me to get it the next time I'm in Oxfordshire, I'll have it. I'll have to bring some blankets to wrap it up to keep the inside of my car clean!

I cannot guarantee that its good...I took the rear cover off to check ratio and all looked fine, buts its from an estate I broke many years ago that I did not have the chance to drive before it fell in bits.the price is right though!

That's fine Dave. Can I let you know when I'm next near you? Are you in a hurry to get rid?

Adam

I have been keeping them for about 5 years so a bit longer will not hurt!

Do you know if the saloon axle is the right ratio for the B18 with BW35 automatic transmission? Mine is pretty worn and I'm on the lookout to swap it, but I'm no expert in the various ratios and I need reasonably high gearing to compensate for only having 3 speeds on the box.

Isn't the back axle ratio the same, just the gearboxes have different ratio stack as the auto has three speeds rather than four, with top in both variants being 1:1?

I guess that the main thing to watch for will be that the axle is the right type for your rear suspension?

Just looked it up in a period roadtest - a '66 122S automatic has the 4.1:1 diff, so the same diff & thus top gear ratio as the regular M40 4 speed gearbox.

David, please could you reserve the saloon axle for me for a day while I double-check? If it's compatible with my car then I'm definitely interested, but I won't keep you hanging on. Thanks, Andy.

Your '67 would be considered "late" as far as the axle mountings, two tubular arms in your case. A few VERY late B20 cars came with a 4.30 axle. Nice for a warmed over B20 and OD but would make your car a bit under geared. If there isn't a tag on it, the ratio can be checked by turning the diff input and counting the turns at the axle end. 1 = 4.1 turns needed for yours. David knows this, just rambling on............
