"Whooshing" noise trying to invoke turbo and P00BD code
Hi folks,
Driving along normally today in my MY2009 D5 auto when suddenly the "Engine system service required" warning message came up and the car appeared to go into limp-home mode. I say "appeared" because acceleration was severely curtailed and there was a distinct lack of power when tackling hills... It seems to me that the Hi-Pressure Turbo isn't kicking in - and I can hear a "whoosh" of air (a bit like somebody pursing their lips and exhaling) when I press the throttle to invoke it... Hooking up my fault code reader, I get a "P00BD" error code, which apparently means "Mass or Volume Air Flow 'A' Circuit Range/Performance - Air Flow Too High", although that's just a generic OBD-II description... When I got home I cleared the fault code, took the car out again and it drove normally for a couple of miles but then the error message and "whooshing" noise reappeared... Other than that, everything else appears normal. So my guess is that the Mass Air Flow has developed a fault (or is simply clogged up?) which has led to a turbo pipe splitting. Does that sound feasible? -- Many thanks in advance! Dave |

I had something similar int my 2008 D5, car would run fine until about 1500 rpm, then just as you wanted power it wasn't there, just as if the turbo wasn't connected.
Some funny whooshing noises as well. turned out to be a split vacuum pipe. It was done under warranty but the service guy told me the pipe cost less than £3. |

Local dealer has the car at the moment and, sure enough, it is a split hose in my case, too. Just glad it's not something more serious! Thanks, folks!

Had a bit of an episode a few years back on similar fashion in the Toyota with a camping trailer (unbraked at about 450kgs loaded weight). Drove from Scotland to Rouen in one day (580miles), into bed n good nights sleep. Up early for another 275 miles drive to Vendee n sun was shining, got out of Rouen and accelerated onto the motorway and had a pop and the revs shot up. Thought the clutch had gone but eventually worked out that there was some slight power in the car. Stopped and investigated and eventually decided to carry on slowly after discussing with a mate in the UK (it was Sunday in France...) Car had no power, especially with the trailer at the back, like driving a 995cc motor. Managed maybe 50mph downhill and was overtaken by caravans uphill, no fun at all but at least the aircon worked. Got to the campsite somewhat later then planned. Anyway called UK Mr T on the Monday who told me to check 'intercooler hose' hidden under the bumper and sure enough it was off. Booked in to French Mr T who fitted a jubilee clip FOC and car went like stink after that so a happy chappie BUT those 275 miles were murder at the time. Doing the same trip in the V70 this year for the first time and like to think it'll be nice n comfy.
Actually come to think of it, the rubber hose split in my old 945 due to age, easy to replace but then again, there is plenty of space under the bonnet on a 945.

I always keep a roll of Rescue Tape in the cars. Its silicon, self amalgamating and can even be used on exhaust blows if you use aluminium foil in conjunction with it. It would do a temporary repair on an intercooler or heater hose.
