240 Estate Popping from engine
My 240 Estate (1989) has developed a strange popping noise when on overrun, which has got me and our local garage beaten. There is no leak in exhaust system or at exhaust or inlert manifold, I have fitted a replacement carb (for other reasons) and this has not changed anything. Car is running amazingly well and frequently does Scotland to London journeys, but this noise happens every time I lift foot of accelerator and is driving me mad.
Any ideas please. I live on a small island off west coast of Scotland (3/4 hour ferry journey)so cannot just drive down road to a Volvo dealer. Any comments, suggestions, advice would be appreciated Graham graham-j.chapman@ntlworld.com |

RE: 240 Estate Popping from engine
Does it have the exhaust gas recirculating system? This has valves in the exhaust manifold to let unburnt exhaust gas get drawn back into the induction system to get properly burnt.
It is notoriously unreliable, but also unnecessary. A colleague's car suffered from exactly your car's symptoms, and the recommended solution was simply to disconnect the air pipes and plug with corks. If this is yours, try it. Best of luck, sorry if this is irrelevant. |
