On another note.. Anyone fitted a modern radio to their 240? Any that people would recommend?

There was one in ours when we bought it, a Sony, and it works well. I think the upper housing has been adapted with a metal plate but it all looks very neat and not at all out of place. I'd prefer the radio to be in the lower position but haven't yet had the courage - or the money - to get it done.

I think quite a few people will have fitted a more modern unit to their cars. If you are fitting it to the top section of the dash there is a fair amount of space. You don't appear to have a surround, which I think you will need (which may require a little modification to fit the new unit as mine did). You will also probably need a converter to plug it in with. There is a 'how to' on here but the pictures have disappeared. This page might help:
http://www.autotoys.com/New_Tech/DIY.../volvo_240.htm I also had to replace the speakers and wires, which was a rather horrible job to feed the wires through the doors. However, I think replacing old faded grey speakers improves the interior a great deal. |

You can go top or bottom location depending on your preference. I relocated mine to the bottom as I wanted to fit auxiliary gauges up top. You'll need to bypass (i.e. unplug and chuck out) the factory amplifier if it has one, located behind the lower centre cubby. there are wiring adapter looms available to connect from the car's wiring to the ISO plug on an aftermarket radio.

The owner before me has fitted a PIoneer KEH-4100, however that was taken out before it was sold, but he installed 4 Pioneer speakers so I will be using them. It's got a standard slot and sleeve, so I think what I'll do is find a radio which has vertical connections in the rear of the unit.. Undid the surrounds to the dashboard to reveal all the wiring, doesn't look like a hard job to Dad.
Hopefully we'll have some music through them soon! Tim |
