V70 2005/6 diesel automatic, noisy airbox?

Hi, I recently purchased a V70 2005/6 diesel automatic and the airbox is very noisy. Is this normal for this model and year. Maybe you have had the same problem and have a solution.
Spoke to the garage that did the M.O.T over a year ago and they said that it went back and forth to the dealer but they could not find a problem. Someone has wrapped some thin matting around the airbox outlet hose and has actually put some in the airbox, around the air filter to make sure there are no gaps.
Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks

Does the airbox sound like a tugboat by any chance and what D5 engine is it black engine cover or silver
