Default Gearbox oil change??

Is it considered essential to do a auto gearbox drain on our xc60? If so at what mileage?

Just do it inline with the published servicing schedules, all available online for you to look at - even better, let your Volvo garage do it that you also get the software updates and knowledge required to maintain the car.

Ok Ive found the answer that is not sarcastic that I was looking for.

Volvo recommends gearbox fluid change every 84000 kms if towing and not at all if no towing method.

Can't find a sarcastic answer tbf.

Always a good idea to change gearbox oil (and filter if automatic) if the miles are high. I had a manual car once with crunchy gears, was skeptical gear-oil change would fix but it actually did.

Autos, to my knowledge, are far more intricate so would certainly benefit from periodic change. An episode of Wheeler Dealers bought a Boxster for peanuts with a knackered gearbox. Oil change fixed it.

If your box is anything like the v70 aisin warner one, Volvo initially said it was effectively sealed for life and should never need an oil change, they susequently, changed this advice and said it should be oil changed if used for towing or taxiing, unfortunately the damage was done for lots of these boxes, there are numerous threads detailing what to do and how to change the oil, which has to be Jws 3309 spec for the V70 . Lots of people have reported improvements after oil changes some were clearly too far gone to be saved.
Usual problems are harsh engagement of drive and flaring between 2 nd and 3 rd. if I were you I would read up at length on the auto box while you have the chance. Volvo seem to have their heads below the parapet on this one.

That's a great schedule: if you want your gearbox to die long before it should.

I'd personally do the ATF at least once every 65,000km.

I would say about every 80,000 miles for the automatic box whether towing or not. If towing fit an additional oil cooler.
