Default New (to me) volvo owner - could use some basic guidance

I Just picked up a 940, it runs and drives very well, but has some issues

- water temp gauge does not work
- gas gauge does not work
- rear brake lights do not work, but tail-lights do turn on when headlights are on. No 3rd brake either

Anything special I should diagnose first? I plan to test the brake sensor, assuming it's just a 2 wire system it should either have continuity or not right?

are the coolant sensors known to die? I guess I'll replace that too, it's inexpensive, could someone tell me where it is?

and for gas gauge... what's the fix there? some in-tank sensor or whatnot? I may just leave that as-is if it's a difficult fix.

Hi,

Temp gauge - common issue. Either the clock/gauge or the circuit board. Board is known for dry joints, but it is plastic sheet too!.
Could be the sensor, there are two. One for the gauge, one for the ECU. ECU is inaccessible under the inlet manifold, the gauge one is forward to the cam belt from the ECU one.

Fuel gauge - again could be the gauge or circuit board. But could also be the sender in the tank.

Brake lights - check the pedal switch. Check your fuses as well. I may pay to remove and refit each fuse several times to freshen up the contact. Also check the bulbs! Remove and refit several times to cut a new contact. Centre bulb - check the tailgate wiring loom from tailgate to body (assuming it is an estate).

Searching this section should bring lots of info on all of these issues.

Des. . .

Hi zrout,

I'm in the same boat as you. Bought a 940 on Friday and it's got a few little probs including the water temp gauge not working at all. Have you found the cause of yours yet?

I've read about the bad soldering on the back of the instrument cluster and will remake all the joints, hopefully on Wednesday if I get time. I have not tested the temp sender yet, mainly because I'm not sure which one it is or of the proper way to test it.

I think this is the sender I need to test, can anybody confirm? Also how should I test it?
