Default oil in coolant 940 2ltr turbo

Hi I'vejust bought an automatic Jreg 940 estate and I love it. I had a 240 estate a while back, and missed it when it had to go (for recycling!). Anyway, everything seems fine except when I checked the coolant it seemed very dark, and a dipped finger came out oily. There's no sign of water in the oil BTW. Any ideas? I wondered about the turbo with having water cooled bearing housing

Do you have mayonnaise inside the oil replenishment cap on the rocker box? If so get ready to do either an Italian tune-up or a compression check to see if the head gasket is going. The other problem you could have is the radiator has sprung a leak between the water part and the gearbox oil cooler part. Check for water contamination in the auto box. If you are lucky a flush and refill of auto transmission fluid and a new radiator should see you on the road again. Radiators obtainable from German, Swedish and French or Eurocarparts at approx £130.

All the best, Peter.

Thanks for that, Peter. I've chected the oil filler cap and the dipstick and there's no sign of 'mayonnaise'. Also, FWIW, the oil in the coolant shows no sign of the red colourant from ATF. I can see that the car has had a recent radiator change, and the ATF level and appearance are fine. his weekend I will try draining the coolant and replacing it, and I'll also keep a careful check on the oil levels, see if I can learn a bit more

Agree with above . Only comment I have is that if oil is in the water a compression test may not actually find it. Oil is escaping via the oil channel to a water channel while the compressive part of the head gasket is still holding compression. Any leaks around the edge of the head gasket? An easy solution as step one might be to check tightness of head bolts. Good chance you will need a new head gasket though. If however its had a new radiator maybe the gasket blew before and what you are seeing is the residue in the coolant from previous dismantling.Cheers Nigel
