Changing both tyres on an axle is good advice and something I adhere to myself. But I keep the non-damaged tyre to have as a spare in the garage.

Interesting comment on the Kumho's, as I'm running ku39's I'll be having a good look at them when I take them off.

Yeah mate, they looked fine until i took them off. I have to also say i had no problem with the tyres, but knowing what i know and saw (the technician pointed it out to me) i will pay a bit more for decent tyres.

It's not just cheaper tyre's that can suffer from cracking.

I've been using Continental sportcontacts this summer, 3s on the front and 2s on the rear. It was a really great tyre on my 2006 Passat (235/45/17). However I'm a bit disappointed with them on my V70. They're great at higher speeds, very stable, but "jiggly" at low speeds.

If I'm parked in a lay-by every time a vehicle passes the whole car wiggles. I wondered if this was tyres or suspension so gave the car a little sideways shove and all the movement was in the tyres, not in the suspension. I did the same on a 2001 V70 with 195/65/17 Nokians and the tyre didn't wiggle much at all.

The Contis do seem to be about 10mm wider than all the other 225/50/17 tyres I've had and I'm wondering if this is the cause, maybe they'd be better on a 7.5J rim instead of a 7J rim.

Any views?

Yes, you would think all 225 tyres would in fact be 225 wide. The Eagle F1 asymmetric is also very wide - the boot floor of my Honda would not close properly on a 225/45R17 EF1A but it was fine closing flat on the primacy and P7 Cinturato.

My Honda and Volvo both came on sportcontacts, which are not a tyre I'm terribly keen on. I will go P7 again when they wear out, as I like the ride and longevity.

Sidewall stiffness makes a big difference, not only to ride comfort, but tram lining - the Honda tramlined like mad on the EF1A because they have very stiff, carbon fibre reinforced sidewalls. The primacy was much better and p7 better still from this point of view.

It's a trade-off of what properties are required in a tyre. The EF1A is a high performance sporting tyre, so ride comfort is of secondary importance. The sport contact similarly is pitched at a sporting market, hence the name...

Good comments, thanks. I think the V70 is very sensitive to tyres. I love how it feels on Nokian WRs but it's slippery in the damp. What I'd like is a Nokian structure with a Conti tread and compound for the summer!
