Default hot when idle, cold when moving

the car has been running a little cold while on the motorway - the needle floats about 1/3 the way up while on the move, while it idles the needle shoots up to 3/4 of the way up before the fan kicks in.

Hmm, i think it could be thermostat, but i only changed that a little while ago at 49k Miles when i changed the H/G I put in a new water pump then too approx 3 months ago.

the car has de-ionised water in it at the moment, and the old oil from HG change - the car is now on approx 55k

there are a likely few culprits -

1) new waterpump = more efficient cooling?

2) thermostat has stuck open?

3) vapour lock? - i massage the pipes to help any air escape into the expansion tank.

4) somethings not quite right with my ignition?

5) wants an oil change?

what do you think guys?

edit: bllox was half asleep when i wrote this, mean it to be in the general 400 section if the mods can move please

Sounds like the stat to me mate

When you changed it did you use a 92° or 89°c one?

If you used an 89°c, it may be opening too early and over cooling the engine.

Must admit though, my B18u was the same as you describe!

not sure if it is an 89 one, just went up to the counter, asked for a trolley load of bits lol.

iv ordered a new one from GSF car parts, will check it to see if its a winter or summer one.

mate suggets it could be the new water pump, being extreemly efficient, and the needle might level back out after a few months use....hmm
