Unhappy Ive broken it! :(

Well it was all going so well until in my foolishness to show a Nissan 350Z boy racer a good run for his money!

Last Thursday after coming off a roundabout in 2nd gear I mashed the throttle to the floor all the way up to the rev limit with a big grin on my face. This rapidly vanished after shifting up to 3rd as the car started to quite violently what can be only described as pulsing the power on and off.

I backed off and shifted up again into 4th and the car started to drive normally again. Upon stopping a half mile down the road all appeared fine until I pulled back out onto the road where the turbo sounded louder than usual and also the car seemed to of developed its own dump valve when shifting gears.

After a few more miles there is a loud rushin wind noise that gets louder under accerlation and shifting gears. The car isnt really down on power so presumed i'd either split or lost a hose.

I have had the bonnet up with a mechanic friend and cant see any loose or missing pipes so its going up on the ramps tomorrow to have a look underneath.

Are there any known weak points to look for and has anyone ever experienced their car's accerlaration power on and off repeatedly?

As always thanks in advance

I had a similar issue with mine and it turned out to be the jubilee clip on the bottom lower intercooler 'elbow' had rusted and had split. So when I booted the throttle the hose blew off and like with yours sounded like a dump valve with the turbo very audible.

Location of mine is on the nearside (passenger side) near the bottom of the radiator. Might need to take off the front undertray (can't remember now) but should be possible to feel for it easily enough without it being on ramps/jacked up.

I pratted about for ages looking at my hoses and taking off the turbo heat shield (pain in the rear) and it was just a silly jubilee clip I could have replaced probably without even jacking up the car!

You need to pressurise the inlet to find the leak, could be split pipe, pipe come off or bust intercooler

Thumbs up

Thanks Andy That is excatly what had happened to mine as well! My mechanic was surprised as he was sure I had a break in the Intercooler elbow joint as he's seen a few of these go in the past.

Total cost to repar = a pint of beer at lunch.

I'd like to say i've now learnt my lesson and will drive her less aggresively but truth be told it makes such a good noise from 3,000 to 5,000 it's just too hard to not do it!

I'm sure that the ETM is gone as its now showing all the early signs of failure.

Thanks everyone for there assistance.

That's great to hear! Glad it was as simple as it was with mine. Such a small thing can cause such a 'big' problem. I was worried it was something really major with mine at the time
