Default Squeaky gear change

Hi guys, need a bit of advice really before I take the dreaded trip to the dealer! I have a V70, 58 plate, 2.4d se lux, 70000 miles with a manual gearbox and have had it for about four months now with absolutely no problems, up till now. Love it. But over the last week or so when changing gear I get a horrid squeak?? Not sure if its the gaiter or a deeper problem in the gearbox. Anyone either had this or knows what it could possibly be?
Many thanks
Andy

From the detail you provide I think it requires a mechanic's test drive to meaningfully diagnose the issue (but on the face of it I will guess there is a 'dry' joint in the selector mechanism between the gear lever and the transmission - not a problem in the gear-box itself)

Just returned from volvo main dealer and been informed its quite a common problem in that the 'life time' lubricant becomes displaced??? Don't get the life time quote then but hey ho.
An hours work to re lube the plastic mechanism £98.00 plus vat!!
Off to local garage to get the job done........
