Front Wheel Bearings.

Hi All.

Last MOT time (May 2012) I did a silly thing, with not a lot of time to spare I let the garage that do my MOT fit a new wheel bearing in order for it to pass.

About 6 months ago while doing my usual servicing I noticed that when taking the grease cap off, a lot of rusty gunk dripped out.

Either

A

Bearing was poorly fitted, allowing moisture into the hub when fitting.

B

A very poor quality bearing had been fitted.

Or

C

Both of the above.

So troops, what I'm looking for is, the manufacturer, part number, suppler of the wheel bearings you fit to your 240's.

I noticed a few years ago that even buying 2 of the exact same bearings didn't provide me with 2 identical kits. In this case they where Quentin Hazel kits but both had completely different seals, one was like a camshaft seal and the other was a two piece metal ring and rubber 'o' ring seal.

Any hints and tips would be great.

or D - The garage didn't fit a new bearing, maybe tightened it up a flat, and gave you a pass.

I think I would rely on Brookhouse to supply bearings that were suitable/fit for purpose and at reasonable cost.

get the numbers off the 4 bearing components something like LM 2302 for example and go to an engineering bearing supplier such as http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/index.html and you will get the best at a reasonable price , they would probably do the seal too if you measure the 3 dimensions .

I got two from a well known aftermarket supplier back in 2005 and had them fitted by a mec'.
About 2 or 3 years later one welded itself to the stub axle! I ended up replacing the strut complete with a bearing from a yard. Regreased it and it is fine. The one on the other side is still there too. The ones fitted in 2005 were Scan-tech . The one from the yard I have no idea if it's an OE or what.
SKF are probably as good as you'll get, wouldn't be at all surprised if they were OE.
Oh, another supplier is http://www.bearingboys.co.uk/ . Pretty sure they supply SKF ones. Not used them for bearings but have for lawnmower belts, and always had good service .
