Hello

This:

from the Telegraph.

How many of our Volvos will survive this onslaught?

Certainly a concern if you're running a modern, not so much an issue for classics (700 series and before).

Not really a "new" MOT as these changes people would of received advisories for just around a year for them, and no doubt been told that from the 20th March they would be a fail.

The only thing that worries me is the airbag light. It's not on now (touch wood), but if it ever does I'm not going to spend several hundred quid to have it fixed, I'll rip the bags out and then take the bulb out.

Other additional items subject to the tougher testing regime include .. .. the catalytic converter.
How do they test it 'more'?

The new test will check the presence of the cat, if the car left the factory with a cat (this is checkable on the computer via VIN number) it must still be wearing one.

IMHO, the 'spirit' of the MOT has always been that the car should meet the safety & emissions standards for which it was manufactured.

One problem I would foresee would be for modifications such as DPF deletion, which are certainly not in the spirit of the emissions regulations. Whilst it may not be picked in last years' MOT, or even this years' (though it might), I'd say it's only a matter of time til the MOT catches up.

But if all we have to do is ensure each car on our roads is maintained to it's respective original safety & emissions levels, why is that bad?

Oh, I thought that is why people had decat pipes. Must just be for emissions.
