Timing
Hi I recently joined this forum after purchasing a cheap & oldish V70 diesel on a V plate with the Audi engine 2461cc? This after picking up some work requiring a lot of traveling & tool carrying! Initially the idea was to just take the burden from my new car which is too small for to carry the tools I need. The Volvo is a lovely car smooth, comfortable and solid. I liked it so much I decided to give it a service as there was no service history came with the car. I used the garage around the corner, O yes they do Volvos all the time they gave the car a good 'thumbs up' saying it was worth spending a bit of money on it and I agree (still). After the service they said with a sharp intake of breath "HMMMM! be wise to change the timing belt as well because if that goes goodbye engine!" "OK" I said remembering the days of timing chains "lets do it". When I got the car back it had developed a loud clacking noise, Noisy injector I was told, Why had it become noisy all of a sudden "Oh they go like that sometimes" though the car was still very smooth and quiet once up to speed, it was a bit rough on the lower revs? I looked at the bill not unreasonable I thought but I was not happy. I looked at the bit about what oil they had used 5/40 looked at volvo recommend oil 0/30 got them to change it, it did reduce the noise and the engine seemed a bit happier, but not I. I took it to a Volvo garage, these guys were good! "Reckon your timings out, did the 'other garage' change the pump & pulleys when they changed the timing belts" "dunno" says I "I'll ask" the answer was "No" "did they time it electronically" again "No" "Better put it on the diagnostics". Sure enough pump 5 degrees too advanced & the adjuster pulley was maxed out so no adjustment left, pump belt needs to be refitted but can't do it until the middle of April????? As one with loads of engineering experience I am not devoid of mechanical prowess, in my younger days on a Sunday morning I could replace the clutch on an Austin 1800 on me todd, before breakfast (no joke) & I have rebuilt a few engines over the years but always petrol. In my mind I am thinking 5 Degrees too advanced, pistons not reaching not reaching TDC combustion too early? Hence a stupid question to ask any garage "In light of the weeks until I can get this done, is it ok to run the car with the pump timing at 5 degrees in advance?" (there goes that sharp sharp intake of breath again) "HMMMM Wouldn't like to say, who knows?" the mechanic answered with a shrug! I know it is back covering but is there any one out there who could give me a clue as to the answer to my stupid question?

there are no stupid questions,if you do not know the answer it is always better to aski personaly would not drive the car with the timing that far out. having done these timing belts on vag engines (pump and cam belt.) you need to get it sorted very soon.they are very good engines and very reliable, if a little noisy. but they do need setting up spot on with pump timing. as reguards driving with the timing that far out i would say NO!!,tis only my opinion of course, others may differ.
p s. is that brackley northants, if so i might know a lad who can sort it for you. ron.

Thanks for your reply, I was having this argument with myself about whether I should seek somewhere where I could get it fixed sooner and I think that has to be the case but it needs to be someone who is familiar with these engines, if you know someone who can help that would be great and yes it is Brackley Northants.
